What's My Skin Type? 2

Knowing your skin type is the first step in developing a skincare routine that will work best for you. Skin types are categorized based on some characteristics such as: how much water your skin contains, how much oil your skin produces and how frequently your skin reacts to the environment and substances it comes in contact with largely determine your skin type.ย The basic skin types are:ย ย

  • Oily Skin
  • Dry Skin
  • Combination Skin
  • Normal Skin
  • Sensitive Skinย
  • Mature Skin

Let's help you find out exactly what skin type you are.

To identify your skin type, follow these simple steps for a skin type test.

1. Wash your face with a gentle moisturizer. Pat your skin dry. Do not rub your skin dry nor use oil-based cleanser as doing so will affect test result.ย

2. Wait for 1 hour. While waiting, do not touch your face nor apply any skincare product. Just be cool and stay away from doing anything that will make your face sweat.

3. Dab your face with a tissue. Use fresh, clean and unruffled tissue so that you can see any oil stain on it.

4. Determine your skin type by checking the tissue for oil stain and getting to know how your facial skin feel 1 hour after cleansing.ย ย

Oily Skin

The tissue will be stained with oil/grease that came off your skin. Oily skin is usually shiny due to excessive skin oil production by sebaceous glands. Oily Skin can be prone to acne/pimple. Acne is a common skin blemish in oily skin as pores are easily clogged by plugs of dead skin cells, debris and impurities trapped in oil.ย

Your skin requires routine care with custom made products that reduce skin oil, that do not clog pores (noncomedogenic) and provide adequate skin moisturization for a natural glow.ย

Here are some of our product suggestions for Oily Skin.

Dry Skin

You may see flakes of dead skin on the tissue and your skin may feel taut/tight.ย  Dry skin looks dull and rough. Dry skin can crack, peel or become itchy, inflamed or irritated. Skin flakes and rough patches can develop if the skin becomes too dry, especially on the back of hands, arms and legs, elbows, knees, soles and palms.

For Dry Skin, you need skincare formulas with deep moisturizing and nourishing properties to keep the skin hydrated and nourished with essential nutrients. Periodic exfoliation helps to remove dead skin cells, unclog pores and keep the skin fresh and smooth.ย  ย

Try these products for your Dry Skin.

ย Normal Skin

The tissue shows neither oil stains nor dead skin flakes.ย Normal Skin isย the ideal type as it isย neither too dry or too oily. Younger people more than older people are more likely to have normal skin. Normal Skin usually feels smooth and supple with a natural glow.

Although Normal Skin does not experience major problems, your skin still needs routine care with customized formulas to sustain its natural beauty. Our product line for Normal Skin also works for Combination Skin.ย Here's our product line for Normal Skin.

In Combination Skin, some skin areas are dry, oily and normal at the same time.ย T-zone area (nose, forehead, and chin) is usually oily, while other multiple skin areas exhibit characteristics of oily, dry and normal skin types.ย

Doing a skin patch test of skincare products before skin application is advised to know if your skin is sensitive to product ingredient(s).

Mature Skin

Older folks usually spot Mature Skin as their skin begins to lose the ability to function properly. Loss of capacity to produce adequate amount of skin oil to soften and lubricate the skin is seen in Mature Skin. Skin moisture loss (transepidermal water loss) is high in Mature Skin due to lack of skin oil to seal and lock in skin moisture. Using oil-based moisturizing creams helps to hydrate and lubricate Mature Skin.ย

The rate of natural skin exfoliation slows down in Mature Skin which leads to build-up of dead skin cells. Accumulated layers of dead skin cells make the skin look dull and lackluster with uneven tone. The skin becomes rough and hard making it difficult for applied skincare products to be absorbed. Periodic exfoliation with face and body scrub peels off dead skin layers to expose new, brighter, evenly toned, soft and smooth skin.ย

There is loss of subcutaneous tissue and fat layer that support the skin barrier structure in Mature Skin as it loses its regenerative and restorative capacity. With loss of this important skin support, Mature Skin becomes saggy, develop wrinkles and pronounced expression lines. Visible pores, age spots and blotchy blemishes are additional signs of Mature Skin. Exposure to sun is implicated in Mature Skin and Premature Skin Aging. Sun UV rays damage connective tissue fibers that maintain the elasticity and firmness of the skin.ย

Although older people develop Mature Skin, younger individuals with sun damaged-skin experienceย Premature Skin Aging with skin characteristics similar to that of Mature Skin.ย

Daily skincare routine that involves regular application of products that address signs of Mature Skin helps to diminish their appearances and make Mature Skin look younger, smoother, firmer, softer and radiant.
